Custom Kapu Ki'i Tiki Mug - Lava Red
Inspired from my visits to Puuhonua O Honaunau (City of Refuge) on the Big Island, Kapu' Ki'i came to be..
Breaking a kapu was believed to incur the wrath of the gods. Hawaiians often chased down an offender and swiftly put him to death unless he could reach a puuhonua, or place of refuge. There he could be absolved by a kahuna (priest) in a purification ceremony, then return home with his transgression forgiven. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle.
I make very few of these as this was another single mold design and the original sculpt was destroyed. Lots of cleanup and recording to get this one back...
This custom Kapu' Ki'i has been carved up in a woodgrain and done up in a Jungle Brown glaze outer with a bright Lava red interior.
Stands at 8 3/4" Tall and Holds 16
